CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Orchestra is proud to announce its 2025–26 season, marking 108 years of the Orchestra’s storied history and 24 years of its acclaimed partnership with Music Director Franz Welser-Möst

The season runs September 2025 through May 2026 at Severance Music Center and promises to highlight the Orchestra’s unparalleled artistry and dedication to the cultural enrichment of Greater Cleveland. It features an exceptional roster of guest artists, each bringing their unique brilliance to the stage of Mandel Concert Hall.

“As we unveil The Cleveland Orchestra’s 2025–26 season, we celebrate our remarkable 24-year partnership with Music Director Franz Welser-Möst. This upcoming season stands as a testament to his vision of artistic excellence, as well as our shared mission to inspire and engage our community through memorable musical experiences. Every concert is an invitation to enjoy the depth and beauty of this incredible orchestra,” said André Gremillet, President & CEO of The Cleveland Orchestra.

Franz Welser-Möst’s leadership is at the heart of The Cleveland Orchestra’s continued growth, and his influence is felt deeply in the 2025–26 season. As Music Director, he brings a perspective that blends tradition with innovation, ensuring every performance is both a celebration of the past and an exploration of new musical frontiers.

"After 24 years with the Cleveland Orchestra, we have developed a relationship of great depth and understanding, and I am tremendously proud of what we've built. Of the many outstanding programs in the 2025–26 season for which I hope you will join us, 'Fidelio' holds a special place in my heart and in our journey together. Beethoven's only opera, 'Fidelio' stands as a singular testament to the human spirit and the power of courage—themes that resonate deeply with our times. It also is representative of one the artistic achievements of the last several years that is especially meaningful to me: the revitalization and further development of the opera tradition at The Cleveland Orchestra, which benefits both our audiences and our Orchestra,” Welser-Möst said.

Music Director Franz Welser-Möst Conducts

Welser-Möst opens the season with two dance-inspired works from September 26 to 28. Ravel’s most famous composition, Boléro, is paired with the sumptuous “Dance of the Seven Veils” from Richard Strauss’s Salome, which Welser-Möst previously conducted with The Cleveland Orchestra at Carnegie Hall.

On October 2 and 5, Welser-Möst once again showcases his mastery of Mahler with Das Lied von der Erde, a powerful work the Music Director and The Cleveland Orchestra last performed together during their 2008 European tour.

He leads four performances of Beethoven’s soaring Symphony No. 9, a work he first conducted with The Cleveland Orchestra in 2007, from October 23 to 26. He’s joined by The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and vocalists Joélle Harvey, Taylor Raven, Miles Mykkanen, and Dashon Burton.

Welser-Möst is back to kick off 2026 at Severance with two weeks of wide-ranging programs, starting with Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 11 from January 8 to 10. Then, The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus joins the Orchestra as Welser-Möst conducts Verdi’s Requiem from January 13 to 15. It’s a piece Welser-Möst has not conducted in Cleveland in more than 20 years.

The season wraps up with three programs conducted by Welser-Möst, including excerpts from Wagner’s Götterdämmerung from May 7 to 9, three performances of Beethoven’s Fidelio on May 16, 21, and 24, and Adolphus Hailstork’s Epitaph for a Man Who Dreamed and Dvořák’s Hero’s Song on May 22.

Returning Guests

Tenor Limmie Pulliam and baritone Iurii Samoilov return for Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde on October 2 and 5. Pulliam made his Cleveland Orchestra debut in 2022 in the title role of Verdi’s Otello, and both vocalists most recently performed with the Orchestra in Puccini’s The Girl of the Golden West in 2023.

Pianist Daniil Trifonov first performed with The Cleveland Orchestra while he was student at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Now, as a frequent Cleveland collaborator, he’ll perform Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 2 from October 9 to 11.

Pianist Garrick Ohlsson, whose relationship with The Cleveland Orchestra spans five decades, returns for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 on October 30, November 1, and 2.

Dalia Stasevska, chief conductor of Lahti Symphony Orchestra and artistic director of the International Sibelius Festival, made her debut with Cleveland in 2024. She returns from November 20 to 23 to conduct Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9. This beloved symphony is paired with Mexican composer Revueltas’s La noche de los mayas, which offers another unique perspective of North American music.

Star pianist Yuja Wang joins Petr Popelka, chief conductor of the Wiener Symphoniker, for a double feature of concertos by Ligeti and Ravel from November 28 to 30. The program culminates with Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, famously orchestrated by Ravel. Popelka made his Cleveland Orchestra debut during the 2024 Summers at Severance series, while Wang first performed with Cleveland in 2011.

The Cleveland Orchestra’s exploration of profound choral repertoire continues with Handel’s Messiah with one of the leading conductors in Baroque repertoire, Bernard Labadie, and The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus from December 4 to 6. This will be Labadie’s first time conducting the piece with The Cleveland Orchestra.

Antonello Manacorda, whose Cleveland Orchestra debut was at Blossom Music Center in 2024, conducts Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 and Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with frequent guest and violinist Augustin Hadelich from February 5 to 7. Manacorda is well-versed in both composers’ works, having recorded cycles of both with Kammerakademie Potsdam as their Chief Conductor.

Barbara Hannigan, who made her Cleveland Orchestra debut as a soprano in 2002 and as a conductor in 2023, leads Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess: A Symphonic Picture on February 12 and 14. It’s a celebration of American music by Ruggles, Crumb, and Barber.

From February 19 to 21, preeminent American composer John Adams leads his newest orchestral work, Frenzy, as well as his arrangements of three pieces by Piazzolla, widely regarded as the foremost composer of Argentine tango. Ohio native and pianist Aaron Diehl joins the program for Timo Andres’s Made of Tunes, which was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for Diehl himself.

Cellist and Cleveland native Alisa Weilerstein performs Unsuk Chin’s fiendishly virtuosic Cello Concerto from February 26 to 28. Alain Altinoglu, who returns to Severance for the first time since 2018, conducts the program, which features Richard Strauss’s colorful tone poems Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks and Don Juan

Jakub Hrůša, who has conducted The Cleveland Orchestra several times since his debut in 2012, returns for Brahms’s expressive Symphony No. 3 on March 5, 7, and 8. The symphony is paired with two others by Czech compatriots Martinů and Kapralova. Hrůša is currently the chief conductor of the Bamberg Symphony and the music director designate of The Royal Opera.

Elim Chan conducts two programs this season, starting with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 and Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto with Cleveland Orchestra Principal Trumpet Michael Sachs from March 12 to 15. Then, she leads a colorful program with works by Daniel Kidane, Bartók, and Scriabin from March 19 to 21.

Daniele Rustioni, principal guest conductor at the Metropolitan Opera, takes the podium for Debussy’s impressionistic portrayal of the sea, La mer, from April 2 to 4. He’ll make his Cleveland Orchestra debut during the 2025 Blossom Music Festival.

Santtu-Matias Rouvali returns to Cleveland with cellist Sol Gabetta in Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 2, paired with Schubert’s Symphony No. 9, from April 9 to 11. Rouvali first joined the orchestra in November 2024 and will do so again in July 2025 as part of the Summers at Severance series.

Daniel Harding, a regular collaborator with The Cleveland Orchestra since his debut in 2022, conducts Britten’s War Requiem on April 23, 25, and 26, featuring The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and The Cleveland Orchestra Children’s Chorus. Commissioned for the consecration of a new cathedral built in the aftermath of World War II, the War Requiem juxtaposes texts of the traditional Latin mass with those of English poet and soldier Wilfred Owen, who himself was killed in World War I

Cleveland Orchestra Debuts

Tugan Sokhiev makes his Cleveland Orchestra debut when he leads Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 from November 13 to 15. Sokhiev guest conducts for some of the world’s leading orchestras and was previously music director of the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse and the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.

Star soprano Asmik Grigorian also makes her Cleveland Orchestra debut during the 2025–26 season. Welser-Möst and Grigorian are frequent and important collaborators in Europe, making these performances with The Cleveland Orchestra a highlight of the season. She’ll be joined by The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus for Verdi’s Requiem from January 13 to 15.

Violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja makes her long-awaited Cleveland Orchestra debut from March 19 to 21, performing Bartók’s Violin Concerto No. 1, a less frequently performed but captivating gem of the violin repertoire.

Premieres and Commissions

Welser-Möst conducts the U.S. premiere of Bernd Richard Deutsch’s Urworte, a Cleveland Orchestra co-commission featuring The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, in the season opener from September 26 to 28. Deutsch, the Orchestra’s former Daniel R. Lewis Composer Fellow, drew inspiration from Goethe’s 1817 poem “Urworte Orphisch” and the forces that control human life.

American composer Geoffrey Gordon’s Mad Song has its U.S. premiere from November 13 to 15. It features Cleveland Orchestra English Horn Robert Walters

Jörg Widmann, a former Daniel R. Lewis Composer Fellow, makes his Cleveland Orchestra conducting debut with three of his own compositions, including the U.S. premiere of Danse macabre, on April 30 and May 2. The following week, Welser-Möst leads the U.S. premiere of a Cleveland Orchestra co-commission — Olga Neuwirth’s Zones of Blue, which showcases Widmann on clarinet.

May 22 is the world premiere of Jüri Reinvere’s Concerto for Violin, Harp, and Orchestra, a Cleveland Orchestra commission. It features Cleveland Orchestra Principal Harp Trina Struble alongside violinist Leila Josefowicz and is the second piece by the Estonian composer that the Orchestra has performed.

Cleveland Orchestra on Tour

Music Director Franz Welser-Möst and The Cleveland Orchestra perform twice at Carnegie Hall during the 2025–26 season. On January 20, Welser-Möst conducts the Orchestra in Verdi’s Requiem, featuring soprano Asmik Grigorian, mezzo-soprano Deniz Uzun, tenor Joshua Guerrero, bass Tareq Nazmi, and The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus. The following night, Welser-Möst will lead the Orchestra in a program of Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 and Shostakovich'’ Symphony No. 11.

Welser-Möst brings Verdi’s Requiem from Carnegie Hall to the Adrienne Arsht Center of the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County on January 23 and 24. The 2026 Miami season also includes Itzhak Perlman: Cinema Serenade on January 28, where the violinist joins the Orchestra to perform iconic film scores, and a performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 with pianist Yefim Bronfman on January 30 and 31. The Residency concludes with Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring on March 27 and 28, conducted by Rafael Payare, alongside Sergey Khachatryan performing Sibelius’s Violin Concerto. These performances highlight the Orchestra’s enduring connection to the cultural fabric of Miami.

2026 Mandel Opera & Humanities Festival

The fourth annual Mandel Opera & Humanities Festival, with its theme of Courage, is centered on three performances of Beethoven’s powerful opera Fidelio on May 16, 21, and 24.

Franz Welser-Möst, a passionate advocate for bringing the rich world of opera to Cleveland, leads The Cleveland Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, and an exceptional cast of vocalists. Malin Byström as Leonore, David Butt Philip as Florestan, Tomasz Konieczny as Don Pizarro, and Martin Summer as Rocco are all making their Cleveland Orchestra debuts.

Fidelio, Beethoven’s sole opera, remains a testament to the enduring power of human resilience, making it the perfect centerpiece for this year’s exploration of courage.

More events related to the 2026 Mandel Opera & Humanities Festival will be announced later this year.

Severance in Recital

The Cleveland Orchestra welcomes some of the world’s most compelling artists to Severance Music Center in its recital series, now in its third season. The recital series offers audiences the opportunity to experience these artists in a focused and intimate concert setting, and the 2025–26 season features seven new and returning soloists to Mandel Concert Hall.

The recital series opens on October 29, with the acclaimed pianist Beatrice Rana, who performs a colorful program of works by Debussy, Tchaikovsky, and Prokofiev. Rana first performed with The Cleveland Orchestra in April 2024.

Rising star pianist Mao Fujita brings his virtuosity to the stage with a thoughtful and dynamic program including works by Beethoven, Wagner, Berg, Brahms, and Mendelssohn on February 17. This marks Fujita’s first performance at Severance Music Center, having made his debut at Blossom Music Center in August 2023.

Pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason and her brother, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, team up on March 17 for an evening of beloved and lesser-known works by Mendelssohn, Nadia Boulanger, Robert Schumann, and Clarke. Isata Kanneh-Mason made her debut with The Cleveland Orchestra in March 2024, and Sheku Kanneh-Mason will perform as part of the 2025 Blossom Music Festival.

The recital series continues on April 16 with pianist Alexandre Kantorow, who will perform a stunning program of J.S. Bach, Medtner, Chopin, Scriabin, and Beethoven. Kantorow took to the world stage as part of the 2024 Olympic Games’ Opening Ceremony in Paris, and this performance marks his debut in Cleveland.

The series concludes with two of the most revered pianists in the world, Marc-André Hamelin and Maria João Pires, who are coming together in a rare collaboration that is not to be missed. Hamelin most recently performed with The Cleveland Orchestra in November 2024, and Pires made a memorable appearance on the recital series in May 2023.
